The EditorsDorothy Darke taught geography and general studies for several years before becoming an Education Volunteer for Oxfam in 1986. Her work included organising a variety of school projects designed to raise children's appreciation of the cultural and social contribution made to life in Britain by the ethnic diversity of its people. This led to her appointment as co-ordinator of multicultural education for West Sussex LEA, a post which focused on In Service Training for Teachers, while also continuing her project work along side teachers in the classroom. In 1993s he gained an MA in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford. She is kept in touch with recent changes in education by her nine grandchildren! Barbara Rustin's early career was in publishing. She became an editor with several publishers including the education department of Chatto and Windus and of Jonathan Cape. She took a career break to bring up her children and during this time became interested in the pioneering work for peace being developed at NSWaS. After the death of Michael Lyons, founder of the British Friends of NSWaS, Barbara and her husband Nigel took over as Joint Chair, a challenging role which, for her, developed into an almost full-time responsibility. In this role she visited NSWaS annually; but for the teaching pack Barbara made two special visits to observe School for Peace workshops, discuss methods with facilitators, and interview and chat informally with the students. In addition she found time to pursue her lifelong interest in art by taking a degree in Fine Art and she continues to practise as a painter and print-maker. |
